Day 4 – Dishin’ the Dirt

October 24, 2010

This one is hard!  A habit I wish I didn’t have?  I am really attached to my quirks, so I kinda feel bad calling one of them out!  Let’s see….

My life has been touched with random tragedies.  Traumatic events that have really come out of nowhere, so I guess you could say I’m a worrier.  I fret.  I’m kind of an anxious person, but I don’t think most people can tell.  It’s kind of a dirty little secret.  I have a terrible habit of expecting the worst.  I expect every plane I am on to crash, every chest pain to be another aneurysm, every phone call to be bad news.  I know it’s nonsensical really, and not worth the stress… but you see, I don’t necessarily let it affect me in negative ways.  Call me crazy, if you will, but I believe it helps me truly appreciate every single moment.  When things don’t turn out to be worst case scenario, it actually becomes a positive thing for me!  I’m beyond satisfied, almost euphoric, once my plane lands, chest pains subside, and a phone call turns out to be just someone saying, “hello!”

I try to live a fairly routine life.  I don’t like to be blind-sided.  I understand, accidents happen,  so I don’t cry over spilt milk.  But, yeah, sometimes my imagination runs away with me and I can could almost guarantee that there’s a burglar in the house!  😉

Day 2 – What is “Coach Melissa” All About?

October 21, 2010

My blog name is more of an idea, than a title.  My name is Melissa, so that part is obvious, but the “Coach” part may need a little more explanation.

Crazy, almost unbelievable things have happened to me in my lifetime.  I’ve had pretty traumatic experiences, but keeping my chin up and with the support of God and those around me, I have been able to learn and grow and move on.

To me a coach is someone who roots for you from the sidelines, provides tough love when you need it, and who always has your back.  A role model, a teacher, an inspiration, a friend.  They’re there to motivate and support, and brush you off when you fall.  Life coaches, t-ball coaches, Varsity football coaches… they all make a difference in people’s lives.  I aspire to BE that, and I hope if I use the term enough, I will become it.

Day 1 – Random Things About ME

October 20, 2010

(I copied this from a fun blog I follow by my Twitter friend Heather – http://beingmyselftonight.blogspot.com)

Got Love For The Haters

1. My favorite music is Motown.  I also love Reggae and Jamaican Dancehall!2. I had open heart surgery in Sept. 2008, got married a month later, honeymooned in Greece, then celebrated my 28th birthday that November!!
3. I HATE complicated fruit.  If it takes longer to prep than to eat, I refuse to eat it.
4. I work full time for an orthodontist (LOVE), and I  make extra pocket money by working for Team Beachbody as a coach… which means I talk about their products and how amazing they are (I’ve lost 90lbs!) on social media sites and sign up other coaches to talk about their products… yeah, I get $$ for that!
5. I want to have a baby, and I want to adopt a baby.
6. I find it extremely difficult to fall asleep before midnight.
7. I have a stupid, cheap car.  But that no-a/c, run down POS affords me and my hubby pretty awesome vacations!  Live below your means!
8. My favorite US city to visit is New Orleans.
9. I drink a mug of coffee and a glass of wine every day.
10. I can bake.  I bake well.  I don’t bake.  There’s no way I can have that kind of food in my house with just two people living in it!  I have a serious portion control problem… and a sharing problem.
11. My favorite number is 11.
12. My hubby and I have a designated date night every week.  We do not compromise this time.
13. I want to go back to school.  I really want my degree, but at (almost) 30 years old, I’m still “undecided” about my major!
14. I’ve always wanted to be The Blues Brothers for Halloween.  I’m looking for the Jake to my Elwood.
15. I’m involved in a love affair with my Foreman Grill.

My Wedding Ring Doesn’t Fit…

October 17, 2010

  …because it’s too big!!

One of my very first, noticeable accomplishments during my weight loss journey (part deux) was the feeling of my beautiful wedding ring becoming more and more loose.  Thankfully, I hadn’t gained too much between my wedding and when I started my diet/exercise program, so we’re talking just a few weeks into it when I noticed this change.

A small, insignificant thing to some, but a huge deal to me!  It was like dropping a dress size or something!

Of course, my reaction was priceless; “Oh my gosh, honey!!  LOOKLOOKLOOK!  It’s too big!  I could flick my hand & it might fly off!”  That last part was NOT true, by the way, but you get the picture.

This is one of those things I’m always talking about!

Small goals

Baby steps

Make a big deal out of these little things, and you’ll find yourself noticing more changes, more often.  How motivating to celebrate every bit of progress, big or small!

I Gave Up French Fries For My Wedding Dress

October 10, 2010

Something to remember when you’re losing weight is to write down your goals… and start small.  Make your goals attainable to help keep you motivated.  Baby steps!

Maybe you’re interested in running; you’re not going to go sign up for the next New York City Marathon!  You’re going to start small – a 5k charity walk, and then a few months later, jog a 3k.  Once you’ve become more comfortable in your running shoes, sign up for a half marathon.  You get the picture.

My goals do NOT involve running, but I love new clothes.  Of course, I didn’t start off at 200 pounds trying to squeeze myself into a pair of size 8 jeans!  I had to set more realistic goals.  First, lose 2 dress sizes.  Next, try on a size 10 pair of pants.  No buying!  Size 10 was not my goal.  I did, however, buy my wedding dress two sizes too small 6 months before my wedding (no pressure… I made it, though!!).  Now I’m a size 4, and own my dream “goal weight” little black dress!

Once you’re at your goal weight/size, you need to stay motivated in order to maintain!  You’ve worked really hard to get the body you have, don’t stop setting goals now!  Treat yourself to a night out every once in a while, reward yourself with a fun new workout program or a brand new pair of sneakers.  How about a laptop or beach vacation to showcase your bikini bod?

Everyone has different goals.  Dream BIG, but start small and work your way up.  This will help keep you focused, motivated & on track to accomplish everything you could ever imagine!

Think Before You Speak

September 26, 2010

It’s the most discouraging thing to hear some of the things people say to you when you lose weight:

– “You’re too skinny.”  Oh really?  When I was fat, you didn’t seem concerned.  I never heard, “you’re too fat,” when THAT was a fact.

– “Melissa looks anorexic.”  I eat 5 times a day. Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner.  I’m not anorexic, so don’t say I look like it.

– “I think Melissa is bulimic.”  And your basis for this accusation would be?  My husband & coworkers see me eat every day and not throw up.

– “You look unhealthy.”  I visit my doctors WAY more than you do, and they’d tell me if I was unhealthy.  In fact, I’ve never been healthier.

– “I like girls with curves.”  I’m not your girl.  I still have curves, too, they’re just smaller and more toned than ever.

– “You’re a workout-aholic.”  Stop saying this, it doesn’t make any sense.  There’s no such thing as a workout-aholic.  I enjoy working out, it’s good for you and people should do it more.  I’m going to talk about it because I want to motivate others.

Most of all, I cannot stand when someone says ANY of these things and then follows it up with, BUT I SUPPORT YOU.  The problem with people saying these things is that it’s not actually out of concern.  No one is staging an intervention.  These words are mean, sabotaging and hurtful.  It is more than obvious that I am happier and healthier now than before.  Healthy Melissa looks very different from heavy Melissa & people don’t know how to process this new image.  Words become critical, oftentimes unintentionally.  I look different and all of a sudden, people become uneasy and aren’t sure how to approach me.

It is just as important for the people who currently say these things to read, as it is for anyone else who knows another person who has lost weight and may say these things.  It’s also going to be relatable for someone else who has lost a significant amount of weight, because I know they hear these things, too.

I want to educate people & hope they realize that what they say has a profound and possibly negative impact on the person on the receiving end.  These words are hurtful, especially when they hold no basis in reality.  If you want to be supportive, then think before you speak.
